মেহেরপুর বাংলাদেশের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম
অঞ্চলে অবস্থিত
সীমান্তবর্তী একটি জেলা।
এটি খুলনা বিভাগের অর্ন্তগত।
বাংলাদেশের
প্রথম অস্থায়ী সরকার গঠনের স্থান
হওয়ায়
অস্থায়ী রাজধানী হিসাবে খ্যাত এই
জেলাটি। অবিভক্ত ভারতবর্ষের
নদীয়া জেলার অর্ন্তভূক্ত বৃহত্তর এই
মহাকুমাটি ১৯৪৭ সালের ১৪ই আগস্ট
ভারত বিভক্তির পর মেহেরপুর ছোট
মহাকুমা হিসাবে পূর্ব-পাকিস্তানের
কুষ্টিয়া জেলার অর্ন্তভূক্ত হয়। অবিভক্ত
ভারতবর্ষে কুষ্টিয়া মিউনিসিপিলিটির
পূর্বে মেহেরপুর
মিউনিসিপিলিটি হিসাবে স্বীকৃতি পায়।
গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকারের
প্রশাসনিক পূনর্বিন্যাসে ১৯৮৪
সালে মেহেরপুর মহাকুমা থেকে জেলায়
রূপান্তরিত হয়।
ইতিহাসের স্বর্ণপাতা থেকে অনেক
অনেক পূর্বেই
হারিয়ে গেছে মেহেরপুর এর নামকরণ
সম্পর্কে যথাযথ তথ্যসমূহ। দীর্ঘকাল
ধরে এ
বিষয়ে ব্যপক লেখালেখি হয়েছে, তবুও
বিষয়টি তামাশাচ্ছন্ন রয়ে গেছে।
মেহেরপুর
নামকরণ সম্পর্কে এ পর্যন্ত
দু’টি অনুমানসিদ্ধ
তথ্য আমরা জানতে পেরেছি।
একটি হচ্ছে ইসলাম
প্রচারক দরবেশ মেহেরআলী।
অপরটি হচ্ছে পূর্ববঙ্গ রেলওয়ের
বাংলায়
ভ্রমণগ্রন্থ (১৯৪০) বচনকার মিহির ও তার
পুত্রবধূ খনা এই শহরে বাস করতেন। মিহির
নাম
অনুসারে নামের উৎপত্তি হয়েছে। তবে,
বেশির
ভাগ মানুষের মতেই এই দুটি তথ্যের
মধ্যে দরবেশ
মেহেরআলী এর নামের সাথে সামঞ্জস্য
রেখেই
মেহেরপুরের নামকরণ করা হয়।
বিভিন্ন যুগের ইতিহাসের
সাক্ষী হয়ে রয়েছে এই
মেহেরপুর। উল্লেখযোগ্য
ভাবে আমরা বৃটিশ শাষণ
আমলের কথা বলতে পারি। বৃটিশ
আমলে ইংরেজ
নীলকরেরা নীল চাষ করানোর জন্য
১৮১৫-১৮২০
সালের মধ্যবর্তী সময়ে বেশ
কয়েকটি নীলকুঠি স্থাপন করা হয়।
১৯৬৯ সালের গণ-আন্দোলনের
ইতিহাসেও মেহেরপুর
স্বাক্ষী হয়ে রয়েছে। এই সময় লাল টুপির
এক
মহাসম্মেলনে মওলানা ভাসানী মেহেরপুরে আসেন।
তিনি স্বাধীনতার পর ১৯৭৩
সালে তৎকালীন
ন্যাশনাল আওয়ামী পার্টি (ন্যাপ) এর
উদ্দোগে আয়োজিত মেহেরপুরে এক
বিশাল জনসভায়
প্রধান অতিথি হিসাবে উপস্থিত থাকেন।
১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে বাংলাদেশের
স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধে মেহেরপুর জেলার
ভূমিকা ছিল
অগ্রগণ্য। ১৯৭১ সালের ১৭ই এপ্রিল
(তৎকালীন
কুষ্টিয়ার
সীমান্তবর্তী এলাকা বৈদ্যনাথতলাতে
গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশের প্রথম
সরকার শপথ
গ্রহণ করেন। এই সরকারের নেতৃত্বেই
বাংলাদেশের মহান মুক্তিযুদ্ধ পরিচালিত
হয়।

Meherpur Jela also Meherpur Zila ) is
a district in South-western
Bangladesh [1] which is also the
smallest district of Bangladesh. It is
a part of the Khulna Division. Before
1984, it was a part of Kushtia
district.

History
Meherpur is a historical district of
Bangladesh for the fact that the
Proclamation of Independence was
solemnly made at the village
Baidyanathtola (now Mujibnagar), on
17 April 1971 of this district. [2] The
first provisional government of
Bangladesh was born here under the
leadership of Tajuddin Ahmed. After
that day on 18 April 1971, the Pak
army killed 8 persons at village
Amjhupi. [1]
